Welcome Jerry Chen!

VMware's Jerry Chen joins Greylock’s Enterprise Investment Team

Jerry, an accomplished executive and entrepreneur, is joining our enterprise investment team and will focus on cloud and application infrastructure and new enterprise applications.

Jerry most recently served as vice president of cloud and application services at VMware. He was part of the executive team that scaled the business from 400 to over 15,000 employees and $5 billion in revenue, helping VMware grow from a virtualization software company to a cloud- and software-defined data-center company.

We’ve gotten to know Jerry over the past several years and believe his talent, energy, and integrity are a great fit for our partnership. As part of the team that created Cloud Foundry, an open-source platform as a service, Jerry ran the product management and marketing teams responsible for VMware’s application infrastructure products, including vFabric and the Spring Java framework, as well as its big-data projects. Prior to the cloud application platform, Jerry coined the term “Virtual Desktop Infrastructure” (VDI) as part of the creation of VMware’s enterprise desktop and application virtualization businesses.

Jerry is joining Greylock at an exciting time in the enterprise software market and in our portfolio. The enterprise space is undergoing a massive transformation driven by growth in cloud and mobile computing, big data, and the consumerization of IT. We see this within our enterprise portfolio at Greylock with several successful IPOs in the past 2 years—including Workday (WDAY), ServiceNow (NOW), Palo AltoNetworks (PANW), Imperva (IMPV), and—and a slate of amazing, fast growing companies including AppDynamicsCloudera, and Pure Storage.

Jerry’s experience gives him a unique view of these rapid shifts in the enterprise technology space, and we’re thrilled to have him on board as we move into what he and others have referred to as a “post-server era.”

Welcome, Jerry! We’re looking forward to a long partnership and the chance to see you grow and succeed on our team.
